I owe it all to my Father…

My Dad was a US Navy S.E.A.L. when I was growing up. His strength, focus & discipline was instilled in me at a very early age. I was proud of who my Father was.

While becoming a competitive sprinter starting at the age of 10 through my early twenties…he pushed me to push myself. To be better than I was the day before. To always strive to be the best I could be that day, in that moment.

It help me develop the mindset:

Results only show up when you consistently focus on improving in ALL phases…of life!

Standing at the top of the podium was the goal…it took focused discipline to get there. It was that competitive desire that has served me well over the last 25+ years.

Advice from my Father

When I graduated high school early, I went straight into working full-time because I wanted to move out and be an “adult”.

It was physical a toll. From getting my arm sliced open by shattering glass I was carrying, to having a forklift run over my foot, I found physical labor for a living…SUCKED. My Father gave me life altering advice that I’ve never forgot…and am eternally grateful for:

“Use your mind to create a living, not your body like I did (he broke his back as a truck driver when he left the Navy). You’ve got brains boy…use ’em.”

It changed the trajectory of my life!

You’ve Got Mail!

That was a phrase I came to love in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Every time I heard those sweet words…I knew I was earning money!

In 1999, on that fast 56k dial up modem, I was building communities in the fitness chatrooms, answering questions, making supplement recommendations and generating affiliate commissions with Bodybuilding.com. Relationship marketing earned me mid-five figure monthly commissions.

AOL, GeoCities, Lycos, AltaVista, Overture…all playgrounds where I learned to write copy, the science of persuasion and how to generate sales without having to personally sell.

From Bodybuilding to Beachbody

Keeping in tradition with nutrition, I found a place where I could help people improve their fitness working with P90X and the fitness personalities of Beachbody. Helping hundreds of independent reps learn how to market their businesses online, how to sell themselves, how to use social media to connect with people, build relationships and ultimately sell the Beachbody lifestyle. It was a fun community to be a part of…but I was restless.

A Change of “Selling” Scenery

In the mid-2000’s I needed a break from the stress of commission only sales and direct sales. I looked for a different way to sell, that had a salary attached. So I became a property manager for a mixed use (residential & commercial) historic building in downtown Tacoma on the edge of the University of Washington Tacoma campus.

A couple of years after that, I moved to downtown Seattle to become one of the Commercial Property Managers for the iconic Pike Place Market. A once in a lifetime opportunity for the kid in me to get to walk those 11 acres on a daily basis. Watching it all come to life each day.

The produce stands fill with food, the flower vendors and their mesmerizing array of flowers in all shapes, sizes and colors. The restaurants opening up. OMG, the smells. Fresh donuts. Flowers. Coffee. The sounds… Buskers. The sites… Fishmongers. People watching. Views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains on those crisp, clear skies. Enough said. 🙂

But sales and digital marketing siren call pulled me back…

Agency Life – Click2Rank

Spent a couple of years with the edgy SEO agency Click2Rank, mainly managing the social media clients, audit work on SEO clients, but what I loved was learning about our ideal customers, their businesses and their pain points with their website and how to sell the value/need of a full stack SEO service.

The OG’s who had Google’s Matt Cutts choking us because the work we did produced results in the SERPs.

Writing – Collecting Bylines

Sure, I’d been writing for years at this point. Emails, chats, blogs, SOPs, training articles and the such, but I had never been a “published writer”. My 1st article was for Search Engine Journal. Since then, I’ve had the honor of being published at sites like Sales Hacker, MarTech, Entrepreneur, Business Insider, Yahoo! Finance, Business.com, Marketer, SEO.co, ReadWrite, MarketingProfs, & Forbes, just to name a few.

The Tradeshow Scene

Wooed away from the in-house agency life, the trade show display niche became my space to help businesses amplify their visibility. At the same time grow the organic visibility of their websites through on-page optimization and content creation that drove link acquisition and improved ranking in an uber competitive marketspace.

This resulted in one of the trade show industry manufacturers, Orbus, hiring me away to grow the organic ranking of several of their websites, improve the paid results of their Adwords accounts and squeeze in some SEO consulting for some of their top resellers around the country. But the variety of agency life was again calling me…

Agency Life Part Deux – Challenge Accepted

For the last 8+ years, I’ve been consulting with businesses around the world & running sales of a fully remote digital marketing agency. Covering lead gen & business development, to strategic growth and expansion into the current role of Chief Revenue Officer to our growing list of sites like, Marketer.co, SEO.co, PPC.co, Dev.co, Website.Design & Link.Build and our game changing AI service Law.co.

Every day is never the same. Just as is each website and client we work with. The challenge is to be the best at what I do and to get the best out of our clients’ websites and their business every day.
